Since summer 2015 feels so far away, I decided to share with you guys my perfect holiday this summer: Zakynthos, Greece. Keep on reading to find out more about this magical place (many great photos!) and the surprises I stumbled upon there…
This is one of the most popular beaches on the island and is basically the ‘trademark’ of Zakynthos: Navagio (Shipwreck) beach. The pictures are taken from a cliff that is sooo high that when you look down you get dizzy. And the only way to go to the beach is by boat- Navagio is completely surrounded by water and high cliffs! The view is really picturesque and stunning, that’s why if you go to Zakynthos, this beach is a must-go!
I visited so many beaches there and each on of them was perfect! Crystal clear water, sandy beaches (sometimes you can stumble upon the pebble beaches- one good advise: it really hurts if you don’t buy special rubber shoes!) and beautiful flora & fauna! So far, this island is my favourite when it comes to beaches!
And there’s the surprise: SEA TURTLES! I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim with these huge animals in their own natural environment! Zakynthos is the only place in Europe, where the Carretta-carretta turtles lay their eggs. During the summer months (June-August) the female turtles go out of the water and lay their eggs in the sand. After a couple of months, if you’re lucky, you might even witness the baby turtles hatch! Anyways, if you visit the island in the summer it is very likely that when you go for a swim you meet a giant turtle swimming around you. But don’t worry, they want harm you if you don’t tease them. I was following the one that you see on the picture for more than half an hour and it was still super chill and nice to me! If you visit beaches like Gerakas or Laganas you will see little wooden houses, which are built on eggs that have already been laid in order to protect them from outside forces. Moreover, you should lay as close as possible to the water and no people are allowed to visit the beaches between sunset and sunrise since this is when the mama turtles actually go out of the water.
And finally: these sunsets! So beautiful! Everything on that island was magical and made me fall in love with it! So if you’re thinking about what your next holiday destination should be: GO FOR ZAKYNTHOS!
